About the Knocklyon School of Music and Concert Bands The Knocklyon School of Music and Concert Bands (at that time the Knocklyon Concert Band Society), a voluntary community-based music education resource, was founded in 1998 by Robert P. Chester to give an opportunity to young people in the greater Knocklyon area to receive a musical instrument education. An initial 35 boys and girls received a crash course on the recorder followed by the formation of the first fully instrumented Knocklyon Concert Band.

This small group gave their first public concert in Santa Maria College in June 2000 and many of those young players are still playing in our Senior Concert Band. Since those early years the School's numbers have swelled to capacity and we now have 150 young people receiving a musical instrument education including participating in our Senior and Intermediate Concert Band Programme.

In 2001 the School took the major step of forming a Management Team of committed parents who now oversee every aspect of the running and progress of the School. In addition, during 2007 we decided to change the society’s name to the current one in order to broader our prospectus, and to try to address the huge demand for musical instrument education in the area.

The School currently has two fully instrumented Concert Bands at Junior and Senior level of approximately 50-60 members each, along with a 20-piece jazz band called the ‘All Star Big Band’.

We are currently based in St. Colmcille’s Community School and operate in the evenings during the school year.
